William Aiken Obituary

Age 92, of Naples, Florida, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, died peacefully.  Son of the late Edward McKee Aiken II and Agnes Friesell Aiken.  Beloved husband of Judith (Bygate) Aiken for 64 years; loving father of William Jr. and Scott (Mary); cherished grandfather of Isabel, Maggie and Jillian; brother of Suzanne (Patrick) Rielly, Patricia Decker, and the late Edward McKee Aiken III.  Mr. Aiken graduated from Edgewood High School in 1947, where he served as senior class President.  After enlisting in the Air Force and serving in the Air National Guard, he attended Pennsylvania State University where he was elected captain of the varsity tennis team.  He was a salesman at Bankers Lithographing Company for 25 years before joining Swinston Company and Allied Office Products Company.  He was a fifth-generation member of the Aiken family, which settled in Shadyside and helped found Shadyside Presbyterian Church where he faithfully served as deacon, elder and usher.  Bill was an accomplished tennis and platform tennis player, and an avid golfer.  He loved gardening.  He was a member of Bonita Bay Club, former member of Fox Chapel Golf Club and the University Club and was a founding member of Fox Chapel Racquet Club.  He proudly served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Fox Chapel Hackers for over 30 years.  His family and friends will miss his warmth, friendliness, enthusiasm, generosity, and positive spirit.  Funeral service and interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Judith B. and William F. Aiken Scholarship Fund at Shady Side Academy (423 Fox Chapel Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15238) or charity of one's choice.  Arrangements by John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com)
