Albert Charles Muse

Albert Charles Muse, a devoted leader, philanthropist, and family man, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Ben Avon to Albert Banks Muse and Marguerite (Vickrey) Muse, he spent his childhood in the East End neighborhood on Woodland Road.

Al pursued his education at Shadyside Academy and The Lawrenceville School before earning his degree from Princeton University. Following his graduation, he joined the family business, Crown Coal & Coke—now known as the Muse Company—where he served as President, alongside his cousin Charlie Muse, and later Charlie’s sons, Chip and Jay.

Al’s dedication to healthcare innovation was evident throughout his life. He joined the board of the Eye and Ear Hospital in 1969, serving as its president for ten years. During this time, he worked to build the hospital's endowment and oversaw its integration into UPMC in 1985. He thus became a founding member of the Eye & Ear Foundation, where he remained an active board member until his passing. In recognition of his contributions, the foundation established the annual Muse Prize in 2001 to honor national excellence in Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology.

A man of many passions, Al cherished spending time with his family and friends in Ligonier and Muskoka, Canada. He loved skiing, golf, and exploring the world, with Southern France holding a special place in his heart due to his time stationed there during his Navy service. His membership in YPO brought him meaningful connections and friendships that he valued deeply.

Al is survived by his beloved wife, Eileen Mauclair Muse; his daughters, Alexandra (Scott) Ehrlich and Nonie (Dan) Shore; and his grandchildren, Max and Will Ehrlich, and Samantha and Ben Shore. He is lovingly remembered by his niece, Dedee (Tad Scheri) Wilson, and her family, as well as by Eileen’s children, Christine D’Appolonia, Carrie (Rob) Barmen, Anne (Andrew) Dickson, and their families. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Trainer Muse.

A memorial service celebrating Al’s life will take place at Shadyside Presbyterian Church on July 26th at 11:00AM. Arrangements are entrusted to John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com)
