Arthur Gilkes, Jr. Obituary

On Wednesday April 6, 2022, Arthur G. Gilkes Jr. passed away at age 78 with his sons at his side.  Beloved husband of the late Nancy Scott Gilkes. Father of Arthur S. Gilkes (Rebecca), and John G. Gilkes (Lindsey). Grandfather of Oliver and Vivian Gilkes. Brother of Ceci Liu, Judy Benson, and Jane Straussgutl. Son of the late Arthur G. and Ann F. Gilkes. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Art “Grampa G” as he was known to friends and family, was born in New York City and adopted Pittsburgh as his home after attending W&J college and marrying Nancy Scott in 1969.   Art was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and an avid tennis player, winning a Conference championship in Tennis at W&J.  As longtime Oakland residents, both Art and Nancy were active in the community as members of Shadyside Presbyterian Church, the PAA and Schenley Heights.  Together they spearheaded Christmas presents, winter clothing and food drives for those affected by steel mill closures in the Mon Valley, supported after school programs for kids in need amongst other numerous charitable activities.  Of course, together they cheered on Pitt, the “Stillers” Pirates and Penguins.  Art was an attorney who worked as a deputy coroner, Pittsburgh Police Legal Advisor and in private practice where he took pride in upholding truth and justice for the little guy.  Art served his country during the Vietnam War with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade and was awarded The Bronze Star with “V” Device for heroism during combat. Art was also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. Friends will be received on Wednesday April 20, 2022, from 1p.m. until a 2p.m. funeral service in Shadyside Presbyterian Church.  In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Vietnam Veterans of America vva.org and the University of Pittsburgh Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (https://www.adrc.pitt.edu) Arrangements by John A.
