Bernadette Smetana Murcko
Loving wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher returned to our Lord on Wednesday January 12, 2022, at the age of 86. Born in Munhall, Pa., Bernadette attended divine Providence Academy and graduated from Duquesne University with a bachelor’s degree in Education. She taught in the Baldwin/Whitehall area before marrying the love of her life, Edward. The couple lived in Crete, Greece for two years, where she taught school, before returning to raise their daughters in Pittsburgh. Bernadette was a people person. She had a zest for life and left a positive mark on everyone that encountered her. She had a quick wit, a sparkling smile, and a kind compliment for everyone. Bernadette was a true teacher throughout her life, inspiring and encouraging her daughters and their friends to always do their best in life. She was a wonderful cook. She welcomed everyone to the Murcko home, and her table was always full of family and friends. She loved the arts, literature, traveling, skiing, and had a passion for music and dancing. Bernadette also was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, cheering for her favorite teams. She was devout in her faith and had a deep love for the Blessed Mother and St. Therese, the Little Flower. Her truest loves in life were her family, and she was especially proud that all five daughters became doctors or dentists. She is survived and missed dearly by her husband of 63 years Dr. Edward Murcko; her daughters Anita (Mark), Lisa, Laura (Brian), Regina, and Juliette; and grandchildren, Jolie and Christopher. Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Sunday from 12 noon – 4p.m. Funeral Monday, Mass of Christian Burial, St. Mary Magdalene Parish, St. Bede Church 10a.m.
