Charles Henninger Srodes
The world lost a gentle, kind, funny, and healing soul with the passing of Charles Henninger Srodes, on January 6, 2025, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Born on September 22, 1941 in Pittsburgh, PA to Jean Henninger Srodes and W. Glenn Srodes, Carl was married to the love of his life, Ellen Jane McCaslin Srodes, for 60 years.
As an esteemed oncologist, hematologist, and internist in the Pittsburgh region, he helped many patients and families navigate through difficult parts of their lives. His calm demeanor and quiet intellect gained him the respect of colleagues and patients alike. Carl listened more than he talked and passed on his caring ways to the next generation of physicians through his teaching and mentoring roles. He recognized the powerful connection between mind and body and was an early proponent of hospice, palliative care, self-hypnosis, bio feedback, and other pain management techniques.
He was a lifelong learner with a keen sense of humor, dry wit, and a twinkle in his eye!
Carl attended Shady Side Academy (Class of ’59) for high school, where he (aka Zippy) played football, basketball, and baseball; and spearheaded many antics with lifelong friends. He continued his love for learning (and basketball) at Wesleyan University in Connecticut where he attended college before completing an International Fellows Program and medical school at Columbia in New York City. Carl furthered his medical training at Duke University during his internship and first year residency. He then continued his residency and completed a two-year hematology oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Following his training, he was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital as a staff physician from 1972-1974.
At home, Carl was a beloved father to daughter Julie Srodes (Dom Dozzi) and son Michael Srodes (Amy). He was also a grandfather to five grandchildren who adored their Poppop: Christopher (Grace Holzer), Alexa, and Tommy Selwood, and Dylan and Emma Srodes, as well as an uncle to many cherished nephews and nieces.
Ross Mountain in the Laurel Highlands held a special place in Carl’s heart. It was there that he shared many of his favorite pastimes with his family— walking in the woods, bird watching, playing bridge or any card game, taking photographs, golfing, and mushroom hunting.
Everyone who knew Carl will carry with them the feeling conveyed by his smile — the unspoken message of “I’ve got you, I understand, and I will support you.”
In addition to his parents, Carl is preceded in death by his brother, Bill Srodes, and sister, Susan Srodes French. Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street from 4:00 to 7:00pm on Thursday, January 16th and from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Friday, January 17th. Funeral service and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania (614 Dorseyville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15238) or to a charity of your choice.
