Charles L. Culbertson, age 78, passed peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024, due to complications related to an aggressive return of his bladder cancer. Chuck was the son of William Culbertson and Eleanor Bates, who both predeceased Chuck. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy Simpronio, sister-in-law, Ellen (John) Rock, niece, Emily Rock (Lance Leist) and great niece, Luna Rock. Chuck is also survived by his brother, Scott (Mary Sue) Culbertson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Chuck knew from childhood that he wanted to be an architect and completed his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University. Chuck practiced for decades in the Western Pennsylvania, and designed all types of buildings from residential, hospitals, manufacturing, auto repair shops, volunteer fire stations and facilities for the arts communities.
Chuck loved Shadyside and bought his house in 1975 which he eventually gutted and spent years rebuilding with his wife Nancy. Chuck loved when people would be walking by the house and compliment it. Chuck would always give a history of the house as he was proud of the results. Chuck had many interests especially music and he played several instruments from classical to jazz.
Chuck could often be found in the yard with a cigar and a cup of black coffee. He was always smiling and had a positive nature, never having a bad word to say about anyone.
He and Nancy spent many years attending and supporting numerous arts and nonprofit organizations too many to name. At the time of his passing, Chuck was helping with the 60th anniversary of his high school graduation from Mt. Lebanon High School.
Per his request, there will be no viewing and interment will be private. Arrangements handled by John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com)
