families, Dorothy is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Nicholas Rescher; her three loving
children, Mark, Owen, and Catherine; much-endeared step-daughter, Elizabeth; three
grandchildren, Myles, Felix, and Ivo; and many nieces and their families.
A graduate of St. Augustine High School, Dorothy later attended the University of Pittsburgh
where she earned a B.A. in English Literature. During high school and college, Dorothy
developed interests in editorial work and publishing which led her to become the Operations
Manager of American Philosophical Quarterly. She would later use acquired editorial and
business skills for the benefit of North American Philosophical Publications (NAPP) where she
assumed the role of Treasurer.
Growing up in Lawrenceville, Dorothy was a member of St. Augustine’s Parish and a devoted
Catholic. As an adult, she became a dedicated member of The Pittsburgh Oratory and Catholic
Newman Center. Later in life, Dorothy would attend St. Bede Church - Saint Mary Magdalene
Parish in Point Breeze where she was an active member of the choir. For almost 40 years,
Dorothy also regularly attended services at Blackfriars Priory in Oxford, England where she
spent the summer months.
A generous person with an outgoing disposition, Dorothy had many passions. She was an
ardent advocate of the performing arts, evident in her long-term support of Pittsburgh Musical
Theater (PMT) as a board member. She was a lover of all things tennis and was an avid English
gardener whose front-facing garden was admired as a neighborhood showpiece.
Dorothy’s other passions included singing with the St. Bede Church Choir,
participating in the Good Friends Book Club, and watching Korean dramas on Netflix.
She was fond of puzzles, especially crosswords and Sodoku. A lifelong student, Dorothy was deeply engaged
as a participant in professional, religious, and community life. She was always convivial and brought cheer to every
interaction with family or friends, whether in Pittsburgh or across the pond.
We will continue to celebrate her life as we share our loving memories of Dorothy.
