Eleni (Spiropoulos) Contis, age 95, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully on April 8, 2026. Born in Vlahokerasia, Greece in 1931, Eleni immigrated to Pittsburgh in 1973.
Eleni was a devoted member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where for many years she baked the church’s prosfora, prepared koliva and served her church with devotion. A wonderful cook and baker, she shared her love through the meals and pastries she prepared for her family, always welcoming others to her table. She also enjoyed gardening and took great pride in passing down her recipes and traditions. She especially cherished the time she spent in her beloved village of Vlahokerasia, where she was surrounded by her siblings, nieces and nephews.
Eleni was the loving mother of five children, thirteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, all of whom were her pride and joy. She was a deeply faithful and humble woman, devoted to her church and always praying for others. Even in her final days, she continued to bless those around her with the sign of the cross.
Eleni is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, John, and is survived by her children, Tulla Velisaris (Perry), George Contis (Cindy), Maria Karra (Vasilios), Sam Contis (Voula) and Nick Contis (Melissa); her grandchildren, John (Carrie), Maria (John), Nikki (Robert), Eleni (Tom), Thea, Yianni, Niki, Eleni (Dimitri), Yianni, Athena, Alex, Nikolaos and Dean; and her great-grandchildren, Mia, Perry, Dimitri, Nina, Dimitra, Christina, Evangelos, Yoanna, Stamatia and Filippos.
