Emil Joseph "EJ" Bonavita, III Obituary

Emil “EJ” Bonavita III, 59, of Pittsburgh passed suddenly from cardiac arrest on Monday, October 20th. EJ lived a rich life that included countless communities, dedicated interests, and a commitment to always having fun despite the challenges he faced. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, the majority of EJ’s life was spent in Shadyside and Oakland. His birth, childhood, education, marriage, children’s births, and career as co-owner of B&R Pools all took root within a 4-mile stretch of Fifth Avenue. EJ made sure to expand his views, first as a college athlete, then on cross-country motorcycle trips, European travels with his family, and a genuine love of learning that he instilled in his children. EJ battled bipolar disorder for twenty years, but worked hard to find joy to gain strength in difficult stretches. He loved spending time with his children, driving fast cars, learning and teaching tae kwon do, watching Pittsburgh sports, and playing blackjack at the casino. He was a proud graduate of Central Catholic High School, Dickinson College, and the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. EJ is survived by his beloved sons, Michael and Christopher, and his former wife, Luisa. He is also survived by his dedicated mother Marie, his brothers James and Michael (Stefanie), and many nieces, nephews, and godchildren. He was predeceased by his adored father Emil Jr. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the many friends who supported EJ through all of life’s seasons, especially Blair, Phil, Alex, Chris, Pat, Jay, and Rox. Friends received Thursday, October 23rd from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvoglefuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street, Shadyside. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul Cathedral Friday, October 24th at 10am. Everyone please meet at church. Interment will be private. If desired, memorial donations may be made online in EJ’s memory to the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund at the University of Michigan.
