Frances Alatis Vlahos Obituary

Frances Alatis Vlahos, 90 years old, of Pompano Beach, Florida and formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 2, 2026. Frances was affectionately known by her family as “Beba.” Fran was born January 28, 1936 in Weirton, WV to the late Efstathios and Bessie (Galanos) Alatis. She was the beloved wife of the late Louis J. Vlahos. Fran graduated from Weir High School in Weirton, WV in 1953, and she graduated from West Virginia University in 1957 with her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in elementary education. She taught elementary education in West Virginia and Pittsburgh, PA for twenty-three years. Frances was instrumental in organizing reunions for the class of 1953. Fran was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her family, spending time with them, and creating lasting memories. She loved and faithfully served Our Lord, His Church, her family, and all who knew her. Fran will be deeply missed by her loved ones. Fran is survived by her daughters, Faye (Edward) Carrig, Vicki (late Efstathios) Zotis, and Jamie Makris; her grandchildren, Alexis (Mark) Plant, Andrew Carrig, Ioannis Zotis, Athanasia Zotis, and Alexander Makris; her great-grandchildren, Elliana and Loukas Plant; her sister, Des Dandalides; twenty nieces and nephews; and several godchildren. Fran was a member of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, and Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church, both in Pittsburgh, PA. She was also a member of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Fort Lauderdale, FL. Fran enjoyed going on cruises with her husband, Louis. In addition to her parents and husband, Fran was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses, John (Marfolia) Alatis, James (Penelope) Alatis, Charles (Mary Anne) Alatis, Ann (Michael) Loucas, and Manuel Alatis. Fran was the sister-in-law of the late Harry Vlahos, George Vlahos, and George Dandalides. Family and friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) on Friday, August 7, 2026 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a Trisagion Service at 5:00 PM. Funeral will be Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 419 S. Dithridge Street, Pittsburgh, PA at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church, Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery in Saxonburg, PA, or Holy Archangels Monastery in Kendalia, TX.
