A life long resident of Morningside, passed away on November 23, 2024 at age 94. The youngest of five children of Ottorina and Frank S. Greco, he was a devoted husband, father, son, “Pap,” brother, and, uncle. He appreciated his Catholic education, beginning with St. Raphael’s Grade School, where he made life-long friends. A gifted athlete, he played football for the Morningside Vikings and Central Catholic High School where he had an opportunity to play at historic Forbes Field. He graduated from Central Catholic in 1948, participating in the student council, Boys Scouts, and on the track relay team that still holds the 880-relay record.
While living on Duffield Street, he met a beautiful woman Almerinda who was babysitting her cousins on the same block. They fell in love and were married in 1956. They celebrated their 68 th wedding anniversary in August and have many fond memories of family gatherings, travel, and music events. They purchased a wonderful home on Morningside Avenue with a large dining room and porch for entertaining family and friends. Frank loved Merinda’s delicious cooking and took an interest in barbequing where everyone enjoyed many summer meals. Frank had a rich legacy and touched so many lives over the decades. He and Merinda shared in raising three children in love and faith. Donna Marie, Christine Bellesis (George), and Frank M. (Bonnie). Embracing a strong work ethic, he provided many opportunities for his children ensuring that they had a Catholic education, attended college, participated in music, rode horses, fished in his hand-crafted canoe, and enjoyed annual beach vacations. One of his favorite places was Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. “Pap” received much joy from his grandchildren and their spouses: Andrew Bellesis (Suzie), Alena Greco Fay (Joseph), and Jacob Greco. He loved seeing them at many family celebrations, music and dance recitals, and athletic events.
With a strong work ethic, Frank took great pride in his career as an engineer for 50 years at Kvaerner Engineering and Construction Company, through which he traveled worldwide. After retiring in 1998, he began his “second career” at the East Liberty National Indoor Tennis (NIT) facility and later at the tennis bubble in Mellon Park for the City of Pittsburgh. He was the first staff person hired due to his engineering background. He retired at age 92 with 20 years of service and thoroughly enjoyed his colleagues and the tennis players.
Earlier this year, Frank moved to the Vincentian Personal Care Home to be with Merinda. They enjoyed eating meals together, attending mass and prayer services, and participating in music programs. The family is deeply appreciative to the Vincentian community for providing outstanding care.
