George Nicholas Kefalos of Oakland, formerly of Edgewood, born September 20th, 1923 in Bridgeport, Ohio, passed away on Monday August 8, 2022. Preceded in death by his parents Nick and Vasilico (Amaxi) Kefalos, brother Cosmos and his wife Ada Kefalos, and his sister Mary Kefalos. He is survived by his brother Anthony and his wife Dolores Kefalos. George was preceded in death by his wife Katherine (Lardas). George attended Ohio State University where he studied electrical engineering and mathematics. There, he played football under coach Paul Brown. Soon after George began his college career, he enlisted in the U.S Navy and served in the South Pacific during WWII as a Seaman First Class and ultimately served on USS LST 912 for two years. He was seasick his entire Pacific tour. After the war, he finished college and started his career in electrical engineering in Washington D.C. Later George moved to Pittsburgh for employment, and it was then that he met his wife, Katherine. They were married for 64 years. He was an avid tennis player at the Edgewood Club. He enjoyed watching all sports. George was a faithful parishioner at St Nicholas Cathedral in Oakland. But what he enjoyed most was being with his family and watching them grow. Many knew him as “Golden Papou”.
He and his wife Katie raised four children. His eldest Nick married to Nikki. Chris married to Anne. Steven married to Donna. And last but not least their daughter Lisa married to Steven Lardas. George had eleven grandchildren: Nick (Heather), Christina (Jeffrey) Stanley, Katie, Lisa (Dr Yianni) Karvounides, Jacob, Christopher, Steven, Benjamin, and Ourania, Konstantina, and George Lardas. George was also blessed to have three great-grandchildren Tyler and Mia Kefalos and last but not least Charley Stanley.
Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Sunday, August 21st from 1-6 PM where a Trisagion Service will be held at 4 PM. Visitation will continue at 10AM followed by a Funeral Service at 11AM on Monday, August 22nd at Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in Oakmont. Remembrances may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral Building Fund OR Pan-Icarian Foundation Scholarship Fund.
