Hazel Dixon Obituary

Hazel Rogers Dixon

Hazel Rogers Dixon of Edgewood, PA died peacefully at home on August 20th following a brief illness. Born to Dozena and James Rogers on January 9th, 1931 in Imperial, PA, Hazel married the love of her life, John, in 1949. Hazel and John were married for over sixty years living in Evans City, PA, before John died in 2011. The couple gave regular concerts together throughout the Pittsburgh area, with Hazel sharing her beautiful lyric soprano voice accompanied by John at the piano. Hazel devoted her life to her family and bringing joy to others through music and hospitality. Throughout her adult life, Sunday was not her usual day of rest, as she spent many years as lead soprano in church choirs, singing among family and close friends. After church, friends and family would gather at Chez Dixon. Many friends and colleagues from around the world visited. Hazel made each feel like a cherished guest in their home with her graciousness, kindness, and extraordinary food. Hazel’s culinary accomplishments, especially her French breads and stunning desserts, were favorites. In the later decades of her life, she was known as Nannie, not only to her grandchildren, but to many because she was a grandmother to everyone she met. After John’s death, Hazel moved to Edgewood to be closer to her daughters and their families. She became a beloved member of Calvary Episcopal Church, sitting in the front row wearing a fancy hat and humming along with the choir. Hazel is now rejoined with her loving husband where they are entertaining and making music together once again. Hazel is survived by two daughters, Christine Dixon-Ernst (Lauren Ernst) and Bettina Dixon (Jon Mazur); four grandchildren, Geoffrey (Julia) Dixon-Ernst, Alexandra Dixon-Ernst, Christian Mazur and Claire Mazur; two great grandchildren, Olivia and Elliott Dixon-Ernst; and a brother, James Rogers. She will be dearly missed (kiss-kiss). A memorial service will take place at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Ave Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday September 17, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the church. The family asks that attendees to the service wear hats in Hazel’s memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Friends of Music at Calvary Episcopal Church or to a charity of your choosing. Arrangements by John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc.
