January 2, 1937 - January 1, 2024
Jacqueline Mary "Jackie" Hughes, of Pittsburgh, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 1, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Alice Hughes. She will be remembered by her beloved sisters, Jean Lemon (Ken) and Joan Sziede (Richard), nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and friends.
After graduating from Seton Hill College, she dedicated her career to education. She inspired a love of reading and writing in the next generation, spending decades teaching English at the Mount Lebanon Senior High School. A strong union woman, she advocated for her colleagues, and no one could push her around. Her love of literature and the theatre was contagious. She regularly quoted Shakespeare and any word in the English language could cause her to burst out in song-some of which no one else (aside from her sisters) had ever heard of. She enjoyed a long, relaxing retirement but never stopped learning or teaching. She relished a quick visitor discussing their latest read over a hot cup of Irish tea and a heavily iced sweet treat, while she proudly sprinkled in anecdotes of her Irish heritage. She avidly consumed news and current events which she discussed and critiqued with razor sharp wit.
She adored animals, especially her dogs, each of whom provided immense joy over the years. Jackie generously and wholeheartedly supported those she loved and the causes she held dear. Her artful quilting will continue to warm and comfort those she loved for years to come. She could cook a mean pot roast, and nothing else.
Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons Inc., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Wednesday January 3rd, 2024 from 9:00 – 10:15AM with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at St. Mary Magdalene Parish, St. Bede Church at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to a local animal shelter.
