Jeanne Thompson Obituary

Jeanne Johnson Thompson died peacefully on September 29th in West Hartford, CT after a long illness.  Born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 6th, 1949, she was the daughter of Robert Henry Johnson and Evelyn St. Clair Moreland, and devoted stepdaughter of Raymond F. Moreland of Pittsburgh. Jeanne attended the Ellis School, and graduated from the Kent School (Kent, CT) and Hollins College (Roanoke, VA). She was a proud member of the Athletic Hall of Fame at both Kent and Hollins because of her prowess in Field Hockey, and had been a competitive golfer in her youth. She served as a longtime aide to Sen. Richard P. Schweiker (R-PA) in the US Senate and throughout his tenure as Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Ronald Reagan.  Later in life, she followed her passion and received a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and worked professionally in Philadelphia and Boston. A lifelong friend has written, “Besides being a Beatles groupie, Jeanne was a star athlete, excellent writer, and talented artist with an exceptional eye who had yet to discover her full potential.  But above all, she was a kind thoughtful, loving and loyal friend with a tender heart who will be truly missed by all who loved her.” She loved flowers, digging in the dirt, fine art and antiques, and all the Golden Retrievers in her life. Jeanne was predeceased by her parents, and stepfather, as well as by her loving sister, Judith Johnson Oliver of Sewickley.  She is survived by her brother, Robert St. Clair Johnson of Phoenix, AZ, and three nieces and one nephew.  A memorial observance will be held at Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh at a future date.
