John E. "Jack" Kunz, Esq., went peacefully to the Lord on December 30, 2024. He spent 63 years married to his wife Connie whom he dearly loved and to whom he devoted his life as he swore she was the best thing that ever happened to him. Together they lovingly raised seven children in Point Breeze: Gretchen (Michael) Short; Mary Anne (Conan) McClain; John (Debra) Kunz, Jr.; Christopher (Wendy) Kunz; Claire (Joseph) Milazzo; Very Rev. Thomas W. Kunz and Joan Kunz; along with 15 of the greatest grandchildren a man has ever known and loved.
Jack grew up in Millvale son of the late William G. and Mildred Kunz, brother of the late William J. Kunz, Alberta Acri, Daryl Glab, and survived by siblings Sylvester (Phyllis), David (Jane), Patricia (Dick) Adams.
Jack graduated from Duquesne University and then earned his J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center. He was a defense trial lawyer and in1988 along with his friends he founded the law firm now known as Zimmer Kunz, PLLC.
Jack devoted many hours to professional and Catholic organizations. He was chairman of several Allegheny County Bar Association committees and sections; President of the St. Thomas More Society of Catholic Lawyers; President of the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County and a founding member of the Harmonie Group. He was a vice president and trustee of the Serra Club of Pittsburgh, past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #3350 and a Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister at Saint Bede Parish.
He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Duquesne University, the Manifesting the Kingdom Award from the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Saint Thomas More Award from the Catholic Lawyers of Pittsburgh.
At 50, Connie told him to go play golf (to his everlasting joy). He joined the Pittsburgh Field Club and proceeded to excavate the golf course with his clubs, occasionally winning a runner-up award with his high handicap – although he admits he was lucky to get 3 holes-in-one.
As a lifelong fan, Jack saw much of Pittsburgh sports history. As a Steelers season ticket holder since early sixties, he witnessed the Immaculate Reception at his seats in Three Rivers Stadium, and traveled with Connie to both Super Bowls IX and X. Together in the bleachers at Forbes Field in Oakland in 1960, Jack and Connie witnessed the improbable Game 7 victory against the Yankees and then went in a streetcar downtown to celebrate with the city.
Jack was known to all as a man devoted to his family, his Church and his profession, and of course his country, hoping he gave back everything he was given by God. Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) on Thursday, January 2, 2025 from 4 to 6pm, and Friday, January 3, 2025 from 2-4 and 6-8pm.
