On Monday November 7, 2022, John Phillips Davis, Jr., aged 97 of Longwood at Oakmont,
formerly of Fox Chapel, husband of the late Mary Oates Davis; father of George
Barrington Davis (Blythe) and John Phillips Davis, III (Jeanne (Bitsy)), both of
Pittsburgh; Elizabeth Maxwell Davis of Keswick, Virginia; Mary Oates Davis of New
York City; and the late Ann Miller Davis; also survived by six grandchildren: Alexandra
Maxwell Davis and Andrew Rodgers Davis; Annie Oates Bennett and Julia Jean Bennett;
and John Phillips Davis, IV and Eliza Mary Davis. Mr. Davis was a graduate of Shady
Side Academy, class of 1942. He attended Williams College and was graduated from
Harvard College in 1947 and Harvard Law School in 1950. He was a partner and former
assistant managing partner of Reed Smith LLP. During World War II he served in the
94th Infantry Division, U.S. Army, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.
Active in many organizations, he was a member of the Carnegie Institute Board and was
the senior Board member and former Chairman of the Board of Shady Side Academy. A
special thanks to Mackara Briggs who provided help, support, companionship and love to
John, for which the family and he will always be grateful. Services will be held at
Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Ave. on November 26 at 11:00 a.m. Friends will
be received at the church one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, remembrances
may be made to the Carnegie Museum of Art, 4400 Forbes Avenue, Pgh. PA 15213 or to
