JOSEPH FORREST CARTER, 74, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born April 6, 1949, in Pittsburgh to the late Kushleen Maguire Carter and John Marshall Carter, MD, of Huntington, West Virginia. Joe graduated from St. Joseph Central Catholic High School, Huntington, in 1968. He attended St. Leo University, St. Leo, Florida and St. Vincent College, Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Joe’s first career interest was as a restaurant owner (Oak Hill, West Virginia) but then settled into medical equipment sales. During semi-retirement, he worked in the security industry. It's widely agreed among family and friends that Joe was a grand master of wit. Wit and an infectious smile that could light up a room were his most prominent qualities. He enjoyed meeting and talking with people, many of whom became longtime friends. He was unerringly loyal to family and friends and was unafraid of defending others. He was well loved for his kindness and ability to give his undivided attention to others. He will be remembered for simply being a good man. Joe is survived by three sisters, Mary Faith Carter (Washington, DC), Anne Carter Moran (William [Wausau, Wisconsin]), and Mary Lourdes Carter (New York City); three brothers, James Hayes Carter (Portsmouth, Virginia.), Benedict Shade Carter (Julie [Silver Spring, Maryland]), and Marshall Vincent Carter (Beckley, West Virginia.); and nephew and nieces, William Joseph Moran II (Patricia), Mary Anne Carter, Margaret Kushleen Carter, Elaine Carter Moran Glassman (Mark), Sheila Kushleen Carter, Madeline Frances Carter, and Helen Claire Carter; he was  pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Thomas More Carter, and brother and sister-in-law John Marshall Carter, Jr. and Catherine Stewart Carter. Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) on Thursday February 8, 2024 from 9:30AM until a Blessing Service in the funeral home at 11:30AM.
