Laura Ellen Janocko
On Monday November 20, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. Beloved mother of Melanie Grace Zamias (Erik
Zamias), and Benjamin A. Grace; grandmother of Samuel and Luka Zamias; sister of Kathleen Janocko
(George Warren); aunt of Nicholas Warren (Kim) and Kiera Spataro (Dave); preceded in death by her parents,
Helen and William Janocko. Born in Passaic, NJ and raised in Wayne, NJ, Laura was a 1975 graduate of Upsala
College. She earned a Doctorate of Pharmacology from Rutgers University in 1981 and was a Post-Doctoral
Fellow at Yale University and NYU. From 1985 until her retirement in 2012, Laura was a Research Scientist at
UPMC and AGH in Pittsburgh focusing on many projects including the pathology and treatment of AIDS.
Laura was a Renaissance woman: a Brilliant scientist, gifted artist, Master Geneologist, and lover of all animals,
especially turtles. Recently, Laura wrote a Children’s book for her Grandson’s called “Jumbo’s Great Escape”,
based on true events.
She was passionate about life, lived it boldly and wouldn't let physical limitations and setbacks slow her down.
She was a devoted parent, a caring and doting grandparent, and considerate to all fortunate enough to be her
friend. She will be sorely missed and was an inspiration to live every day to the fullest. You will be in our
hearts forever, until we meet again.
Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Thursday
November 30, 2023 from 2PM until a Celebration of Laura's Life at 6PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances
may be made to Loggerhead Marine Life Center.
