Martha Perego Obituary

On June 2, 2026, Martha B. Perego, 99, of Oakland. Predeceased by her husband, A. Charles Perego and her parents, Frank J. Brosky and Martha McCook Brosky, she was educated at Mt. Mercy Academy, Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart and Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University. She is survived by her three children, Charles F. (Mary Pat) of Pittsburgh, Robert (Patricia), of Pittsburgh and Martha, of Arlington, Virginia. She is also survived by five grandchildren, C.J. (Andrea), Andy (Jen), Liz (Slim), Catherine Prat, (Oscar) and Emily Zolkowski (Scott) and seven great-grandchildren (and one on the way!): Charlie, J.D., Teddy, James, Oscar, D.J. and Ismahane. She loved God as a devout Catholic and was an early fan of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen and C.S. Lewis. A STEM student, she earned a B.S. degree in chemistry, followed by a Master’s degree in library science. She began her career in the Westinghouse Science Library and, in a long career, worked for the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Public Schools-- the last as head librarian at Taylor Allderdice High School. As a ready reference librarian at Carnegie Library, she was Google before there was Google. And if we ever asked her for a fact, or how to spell a word, her inevitable answer would be, “Go look it up!” She passed that academic drive on to her granddaughters, among whom are a certified public accountant, a university professor, and a nuclear engineer. She was always curious. Books and classical music were key elements in her life. She was a member of the Women’s Advisor Board of the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University (where her father had been dean.) She loved the cottage in Port Franks, Ontario, swimming in Lake Huron and attending theatre at the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford. She was a watercolor artist, and her paintings of the cottage and beach are cherished by her family. She was a wonderful cook, having spent hours watching the early Julia Child programs while taking notes. Despite those achievements, she was most proud of simply being Mom to her children. Born on July 21, 1926, she sadly just missed her one hundredth birthday party which we will celebrate nonetheless.
