Mary Rita Mengato

Mary Rita Mengato, daughter of John and Helen (Grimes) Grosswege, passed away peacefully on Friday September 6, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on November 13, 1929. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Alfred, her parents, and her sister Helen Weinheimer. She is survived by her children, Michele (Ron), Mary Pat (Larry), Richard (Lisa), Elise (Ron); and grandchildren, Megan, Anita (Brandon), Elena, Julia, Brock, and Emma. A lifelong Roman Catholic, she was a member of St. Paul Cathedral and St. John Fisher parishes. She was a graduate of Edgewood High School (1947), and Carnegie Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Science (1951), where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Prior to raising a family, she worked in the research lab at J& L Steel. For many years she provided administrative and accounting support to the family business, Pittsburgh Terrazzo and Tile Co. Inc. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was very proud of her Irish and German heritage. She will be remembered as an avid seamstress and belonged to several chapters of the American Sewing Guild. Her hobbies included tennis, swimming, and gardening, all of which she actively pursued well into her seventies. For many years she served as an advisor to her sorority where she enjoyed mentoring young women. In honor and recognition of her many years of service, a chapter room in the sorority house was dedicated in her name. She will be remembered and greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Monday Sept 9th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Tuesday Sept 10th, Mass of Christian Burial St. Paul Cathedral, 10 a.m. (At the request of the family, everyone please meet at the church).
