He was preceded in death by his wife, Penny Chirigos; parents, Michael and Eugenia Chirigos; and brother, George Sherwood. Nick leaves behind, daughter, Jeanne Antonuccio; son-in-law, Nick Antonuccio; son, Michael Chirigos; daughter-in-law, Bridget Chirigos; and sister-in-law, Sylvia Sherwood. Nick has one granddaughter, Nicole Antonuccio married to Bill Stern and three grandsons, Jordan Chirigos with fiance, Heather; Mason Chirigos married to Stephanie Chirigos; and Alex Chirigos, extended grandchildren Kristen Antonuccio, Marne Hayes and Josh Antonuccio as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren and very special friends.
Nick was born in Pittsburgh on February 26, 1924 as a first generation American to immigrant parents from Chios, Greece. Nick was a proud member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral where he attended church services and enjoyed Greek picnics and special events. St. Nick’s is also where he met his wife Penny. Nick served his country in WWII as a member of the U.S. Navy, and when he returned from service he and Penny were married. During their years in Pittsburgh they cherished their time with family, Koumbari and their beloved "Poker Group”: six couples who remained friends from their early 20s throughout their entire life. Nick hardly ever forgot a name and had the gift of gab. When he wasn’t chatting, he kept busy with creative projects whether it was drafting floor plans for a home improvement project or perfecting the details on his model cars and airplanes. In his younger years, Nick always had his camera on him. He was the family documentarian and captured decades of gatherings, vacations, and everyday life. His memory and strong character will forever live on through his family and friends.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, May 12 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral located at 419 S Dithridge Street in Oakland. There will be a 9AM viewing and 10AM funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral Ceiling Restoration Project.
