Peter Faines Obituary

Peter G. Faines, aged 96, died peacefully on March 22, 2022, with his beloved wife, Mary, at his side. Pete was born in Pittsburgh on April 21, 1925, and lived in Highland Park for most of his life. He was the adored husband of Mary Beldecos Faines and the loving father of George P. (Jennifer) Faines. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Chrysoula Katsafanas and brother Alex Katsafanas; brothers-in-law John, Nicolas, and Frank Beldecos, and Charlie Koines; survived by sisters-in-law Mary Katsafanas of Houston, Texas, Helen Beldecos of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, Vange Beldecos and Dee Beldecos of Pittsburgh, and Kay Beldecos Koines of Cocoa Beach, Florida, along with many dear cousins, nieces, and nephews, including Andy (Nathalie) Katsafanas of Houston, Texas. He was a graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology (CMU) class of 1951 and served in the US Army from 1943 to 1946 in the 10th Mountain Division as a radio operator in Italy. Pete worked for the US Postal Service for 28 years. Upon retirement, he volunteered for the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), United Way, and tutored at Connelley High School's GED program. He was a member of the Hellenic Post 595 of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge of Penn Hills. During the past five years, Pete and Mary lived at Lighthouse Pointe UPMC Senior Living in Fox Chapel and most recently at Cumberland Crossing in McCandless. At both residences, Pete and Mary were active and surrounded by many dear friends. A gentle, patient, and kind man, Pete enjoyed a long and full life of family gatherings, travel, his favorite movies (including Casablanca), dining out (always with dessert), and spending time with Mary, his best friend, and spouse of almost 69 years.
