Peter R. Sammartino
January 22, 1938 – September 9, 2025
On September 9, with devoted family at his side, Peter Sammartino entered Eternal Life after a long illness faced with faith and courage.
Born in Pizzoferrato, Italy, to Emilia and Settimio Sammartino, Peter emigrated to the United States in 1946, following the hardships of WWII. The family settled in Pittsburgh, where Peter attended Central Catholic High School and later earned a degree in Business Administration from Duquesne University. Peter remained an active member of the Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity throughout his life.
Peter’s career included positions at Olson Electronics, Gurrentz International, and Allegheny County’s Department of Budget and Finance.
In his retirement, Peter spent as much time as possible on the golf course. He also enjoyed tennis and skiing, even into his 80s. A proud resident of University Square 1, he cherished the friendships he made there and served as President of the HOA.
Predeceased by his parents, Emilia and Settimio, and his brothers, Eliseo (Vicky) and Vincenzo, Peter is survived by his sister, Anita; nieces Kirsten Lin (Charles) and Lisa; nephew Robert (Nicole); and beloved great-nieces and nephews Marco, Niko, Stefania, Isabella, Hannah, and Rebecca.
Family and friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com), on Monday, September 15, from 3:00–7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Cathedral or First Tee Pittsburgh.
