Raymond Hasley Obituary

On Saturday, December 16, 2023, Raymond George Hasley, born 1928, of Pittsburgh, PA and Amelia Island, FL. Beloved husband of the late Anne Sweeney Hasley. Father of Nancy Hasley (Scott Andersen), Holly Smith (James), and Kristen Gribble (Gary); grandfather of Matthew Smith (Hilary Rosenthal), Alison Smith, Catherine Corbett (Chris Matteri), and Anna Corbett Southard (Michael); great-grandfather of Lilly Anne and Milo George Southard. Son of William C. and Margaret Hasley and brother of the late Thomas J. Hasley. Raymond grew up on the Hasley farm in Squirrel Hill, where he rode and showed horses from the neighboring stable, and helped his parents with farming and with the family’s construction business. Raymond graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School and Duquesne University and then served in the 101st Airborne Division, and in counterintelligence with the Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) during the Korean War. Returning to Pittsburgh, he graduated from Duquesne University Law School and spent the next forty years as a litigator, practicing law with Rose, Schmidt, Hasley & DiSalle, LLC. Over the course of his career, Raymond appeared in trials in 18 states and before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a permanent member of the Third Circuit Judicial Conference, President of the Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County, President of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Opera. Raymond loved to travel and together with his wife, explored the globe. He sailed his boat on the Chesapeake Bay; was interested in architecture; and in 2006 obtained a patent from the U.S. Patent Office for a building with triangular facades. Raymond is remembered by his daughters as always calm, logical, honest, gracious, loyal, and kind. Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (, 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Friday, December 22, 2023 from 2 - 5 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at St. Paul Cathedral, 108 N. Dithridge St. Pittsburgh. The family suggests donations in Raymond’s memory to the Pittsburgh Opera, Development Dept., 2425 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or Cats Angels, 709 S. 8th Street, Fernadina Beach, FL 32034.
