Robert C. Barry, Jr., age 80, died Sunday May 7 in the comfort of his home with his beloved wife Nancy Umstot Barry and family, after a heroic battle with cancer fought with courage, composure, and dignity. He was
born in Lebanon, PA to Robert C. Barry, Sr. and Anna S. (Maika) Barry, who predeceased him. Following
graduation from the University of Scranton with a degree in Accounting, he joined the New York City
office of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., now KPMG. A Certified Public Accountant, he was admitted to
the partnership in 1973. He transferred to Dallas, back to New York City, and ultimately to the
Pittsburgh office, serving some of the firm’s largest financial institution clients. He was widely known for
innovative approaches to complex financial issues. A quiet and thoughtful leader, he served as Managing
Partner of the Pittsburgh office from 1982-1995 and as Partner-in-Charge of the Ohio Valley Area
Financial Services practice from 1993-1996. He was elected to the Firm’s Board of Directors, serving
from 1990-1994; he also served as Chairman of the KPMG Foundation from 1992-1994. After retiring in
1997, Bob joined PNC Financial Services Group as a Senior Vice President and in 2006, FedFirst Financial
Corporation in Monessen, PA as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He finally retired
on the same date as Nancy in 2012. He served on the Board of George Junior Republic in Grove City, PA
for over 35 years and on the boards of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Inc., Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre,
Pennsylvania Economy League, and the American Cancer Society (Pittsburgh Chapter), among others.
Although an exceptionally hard worker during his long career, his most important role was always as a
loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who is already deeply missed. Bob loved golf
and skiing, especially with his family, and traveling – often to visit kids and grandkids who live all over
the country. He was a long-time member of the Pittsburgh Field Club and previously a member of the
Duquesne Club, the Holimont Ski Club, and the Country Club of Darien, CT.
In addition to his devoted wife Nancy, he is survived by his children and step-children Michele A. Barry
(Emily N. Twaddell), Lori A. Barry-Smith (Christopher K. Barry-Smith), Robert T. Barry, M.D., Barbara B.
