Sally B. Miller Obituary

Sally Ann Brant Miller, 82, of Pittsburgh, previously of Wilkinsburg and Freeport, PA, passed away on Friday November 22, 2024. Born to Joe and Jane (Ralston) Brant on March 14, 1942, she was raised in a “big house in the country” with her beloved siblings: late brother Jack Delahunty, and late sisters Nancy (Brant) Cunningham and Marcia (Brant) Magnetta. As a child she loved shooting hoops with her dad and walking in the woods with her dog. After graduating from Freeport High School in 1960, Sally attended Presbyterian University Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as an R.N. in 1963. While there, she led her school basketball team to the PA State Championship and met her lifelong Presby Heart Friends. After working at Presby and Massachusetts General, she spent the rest of her nursing career in Wilkinsburg as an emergency room nurse at Columbia Hospital (which became Forbes Metro and then Lifecare). Sally earned her CEN and eventually became a Nurse Practitioner, retiring as a Manager. After retirement, she continued to care for others as a volunteer at West Penn Hospice. While she was fiercely independent her whole life, she cherished trips to the ocean with her Presby beach friends and vacations with her sister Nancy to visit their siblings in Florida and Minnesota. She also loved detective novels, the news, gardening, and accumulating scissors. After retiring, her grandchildren Lily, Tess, and William “Beck” Buchanan enjoyed her devoted attention, having M&M pancakes with a side of pudding for breakfast after every sleepover. Her unconditional love for them was constant and they will always be grateful for the time they had with their Baba. Her family and friends will miss her deeply, but none more so than her daughter Liz (Miller) Buchanan. They loved each other up to the sky and back. Sally is survived also by her beloved son-in-law, Jack Buchanan, whom she treasured as a son (and who shared her love of sports) and many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered dearly by her friends, co-workers, in-laws Gail and John Buchanan, and all the friends of Liz, Jack, Lily, Tess, and Beck who ever had the good fortune of meeting Sally. Donations to honor her memory can be made to the Wilkinsburg Public Library. A celebration of her life will be held in early 2025, and until then she’d want everyone to enjoy buckeyes at Christmas, stuffed cabbage for New Years, and root for the Steelers on to the Super Bowl.
