Sara Ann Wymard, age 78, of Pittsburgh, passed away unexpectedly on November 2, 2023 while vacationing in Florida. She was surrounded by her adoring family. She was just shy of her 79th birthday, having been born November 24, 1944.
Sara is survived by James A. Wymard, her most loving husband, soulmate and constant debater throughout their 53 years of wonderful marriage, her devoted daughter Anne Wymard Starz (Hagen); and her most adored, cherished and deeply loved granddaughter, Rian. Closest to her were her nephews, Josh Wymard, Peter Wymard (Bonnie) and Francis Wymard (Katie). She was also survived by multiple other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Irene (Boyce) Cromley, her brother Richard, and her beloved son Max Anthony Wymard.
Sara graduated from Peabody High School and went on to receive an undergraduate and then a Master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University. She taught in the Scholars' Program at Taylor Allderdice for more than 15 years. She volunteered as a fundraiser at Easter Seals for several years. Later, she worked for UPMC as the Director of Development for their Cardiovascular Unit; in that capacity she hosted numerous events and outings.
Her true love was politics. She served as a Democratic committeewoman in the 14th Ward, as well as being the vice chairwoman for the 14th Ward Democratic Committee. Sara also served on the State Democratic Committee in Harrisburg. She most enjoyed her vacations when her children were growing up, spending her summers at Hilton Head Island with numerous friends and family. Sara and her family also enjoyed their many ski trips together and their weekend getaway home in Hidden Valley where they spent most of their winters skiing. For the past 20 years, Sara's favorite destination spot was her home in Florida, where she was very active with a local women's club.
She was an outgoing person with an engaging and active mind. She was an avid reader. She was an activist on issues of public importance, writing letters and raising funds for candidates and causes.
Friends will be received from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com). Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 AM on Friday, November 10, 2023 at St. Paul Cathedral. Interment in Homewood Cemetery will follow.
