Obituary

Shirley Lacey Weber, of Fox Chapel, passed away peacefully at home on

Thursday September 7th at age 86.

Shirley was born in Binghamton, New York to Howard and Margaret Lacey. She

attended Drexel University where she met the love of her life, James Weber.

They were married for 67 years until Jim’s passing in March of this year. Jim and

Shirley lived in Heidelberg, Germany, Lansdale, PA, Potomac, MD, and

Philadelphia, PA before settling in Fox Chapel in 1976. Together they raised three

independent daughters and shared a thirst for travel that carried them all over

the world.

Shirley’s tireless energy and passion were difficult to match and a challenge to

those trying to keep up. This energy transferred to her myriad volunteer

activities, most notably the gift shop at Central Medical Hospital, The Clothes Line,

and the Harvest Fair at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church. She was especially

dedicated to The Clothes Line, a resale shop benefiting Magee Women’s Hospital,

where she volunteered actively for over 40 years pricing donated jewelry with a

keen eye. Shirley was recognized as the Hospital’s Volunteer of the Year in 2013.

Shirley was a bowler, a paddle tennis player, a skilled golfer with multiple holes in

one, and an avid bridge player. She was a proud member of the Twentieth

Century Club, the Duquesne Club, and the Pittsburgh Field Club and was blessed

to have many meaningful friendships.

Shirley spent her final decade fighting through a dire amyloidosis prognosis and

wearing a hard plastic back brace to protect a brittle spine. She was not deterred

from her typical pace and volunteerism, and her stoic and positive demeanor

masked her challenges when she was with family and friends. Shirley was a well-

loved member of the community, and her vivacious and lively presence will be

missed by all. She will be remembered for her love of family, her abundant

holiday décor and table settings, and her love of the arts and parades, particularly

the Mummers!

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband James. She is survived by her

daughters Lynda Weber of Newport, RI, Sandy McInerney (Brian) of Fox Chapel

and Melisa Staples (Tom) of Contoocook, NH. She was predeceased by her first

grandson, PJ Horoszko. She is survived by her remaining grandchildren Jamie

Horoszko, Stephen McInerney, Megan McInerney, Jake Staples and Nick Staples.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Monday, October 9, at 10:00 AM at

the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Shirley’s

honor can be made to Drexel University in support of the James and Shirley Lacey

Weber Endowed Scholarship Fund at Drexel University, PO Box 8215,

Philadelphia, PA 19101. Arrangements by John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com)
