Thomas Denney Obituary

Thomas L. Denney “Tom” of Verona PA died on Friday March 4, 2022 at the age of 94. He was born in Greensburg PA on November 27, 1927 to Ruth Crowthers and George Covert Denney. His wife Nancy Clarissa Burchfield was the eldest child of Clarissa Wainwright and Albert Horne Burchfield Jr, former President of the Joseph Horne Company in Pittsburgh PA. They have been married nearly 70 years. In addition to his wife Nancy, Tom is survived by three children, ten grandchildren, and one grandchild: daughter Linda Denney Wagner of Washington DC (Steven) and their five children Ashley (Stephen and great-granddaughter Everette), Preston, Jameson, Edward and Katherine; son Thomas Lilley Denney Jr. of Potsdam Germany (Valerie) and their two children Thomas and Sophia; son Edward Burchfield Denney of Cambridge MA(Jennifer) and their three children Miles, Sam and Luc. Tom graduated from Greensburg High School in 1945, Lafayette College in 1948, and Harvard Business School in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army 1951-1953. From 1948-1950 and 1955-1962 Tom held various positions, primarily in General Sales Management, at Garlock Packing Company, headquartered in Palmyra NY, which is a group of companies that manufacture industrial sealing and pipeline protection products. From 1962 to 1964 Tom was Vice-President & General Supervisor in Retail Operations at the Joseph Horne Company in Pittsburgh PA. From 1964-1966 he worked in private management consulting and from 1966-1972 joined Boyden Associates specializing in Senior Executive Recruitment. In 1972 Tom founded Denney & Company (D&C) specializing in Senior Executive Recruitment and later adding Management Consulting and Mergers & Acquisitions. D&C had offices in Pittsburgh, Boston and Geneva, Switzerland and Tom remained President until retirement. Tom was a former member of the Fox Chapel Golf Club, Duquesne Club, Union League Club of NYC, Rolling Rock Club, and Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. He and Nancy have been long-time parishioners at Calvary Episcopal Church. Tom was an accomplished golfer. At age 16 Tom won the (WPIAL) Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League Individual Golf Championship (profiled in Pittsburgh Post Gazette May 1944 issue “Greensburg Star has 79 at Oakmont”). Tom was on the Greensburg High School Golf Team and competed against Arnold Palmer who was on the Latrobe High School Golf Team. Tom was an equally avid snow skier and travelled extensively into his eighties to ski with friends domestically and internationally. He loved photography and enjoyed travelling, especially to visit his children and grandchildren who lived geographically afar in Boston, London, Toronto, Washington DC and Berlin. Tom’s greatest love was spending time with his family during summers at his favorite place, Gull Cove Cottage on Ahmic Lake in Ontario, Canada. A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date at Calvary Episcopal Church.
