Thomas Thorburn Flannery

April 9, 2021

Obituary

On April 9, 2021 Thomas Thorburn Flannery passed away at the age of 75.  Tom was the son of the late John Rogers Flannery and Sara Kelly Flannery.  He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Stephanie King Flannery; Children, William Flannery and Erin (Robert) Franklin; Sister, Sally (Clay) Hardon; Brother, Roger (Lauren) Flannery; Grandchildren, Caroline, Kate and Emma Franklin; Nieces, Kelly Hardon, Meg Hardon, Sara (Stephen) Aros and Meredith Flannery; Nephews, Clay Jr. (Claire) Hardon, Chris Hardon, Tony (Michelle) Hardon, Jason Flannery, and Tom (Megan) Flannery; and numerous cousins and extended family.  Tom was born and raised in Pittsburgh and attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1970.  After working ten years for Gulf Oil in Boston and Upstate New York, he returned to Pittsburgh, where he purchased and managed an automotive parts distribution company and two service stations. He entered the executive search business as his second career in 1994, joining Resources for Management as a Managing Partner. He subsequently acquired and merged Resources with the Pittsburgh office of Boyden in 2001 and spent the next 20 years recruiting top executives to companies in Pittsburgh and beyond, traveling and interacting with people all over the world.  He and his son, Bill, were fortunate to have worked together the past 10 years at Boyden.  A resident of Fox Chapel, Tom was a fixture in the social and business community in Pittsburgh.  He was known for his larger-than-life personality, his integrity, and his generous spirit.  He played football and rugby in his youth and gravitated towards golf, hunting and target shooting in his later years. He enjoyed writing, playing with his three granddaughters, and driving his M3 convertible on pool-hopping adventures in his birthday suit. He could frequently be seen walking the golf course at Fox Chapel Golf Club and hiking on nearby trails. He will be sorely missed.  Please join the family in celebrating Tom’s life at a reception on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 from 3 p.m. – 7p.m. at the Fox Chapel Golf Club, 426 Fox Chapel Road, Pittsburgh, PA  15238.  The family welcomes all at a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at 10 a.m. at St. Jude Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 310 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA  15206.
